Children's Ministry News January 2008
For Epiphany (January 6 - February 3) we will explore in Church School our practice of breaking bread together in Jesus‚ name. This practice goes to the heart of our life together, and it is an experiential way for all of us -- adults, youth, and children -- to take our place at table in the family of God.
Jr. and Sr. High
Mary Lee Montfort and Gray and Margel Snead will lead our youth in an exploration of the Jewish Passover tradition -- the tradition in which the Lord‚s Supper is rooted. On two Sundays in this period, they will spend the whole worship hour in Church School -- once conversing with someone from Temple Rodef Shalom (either here or at the Temple) about their practice of the Passover and once walking through a Passover liturgy themselves.
1st-2nd Grades and 3rd-5th Grades
These classes, led by Mary Sherlock and Lynne Montgomery (3rd-5th) and Cleta Raymond and Lori Engelhardt (1st-2nd), will follow a curriculum on the Eucharist from the Living the Good News series. This curriculum will orient the children to an overall theology of the Eucharist -- that here we gather with Jesus to offer thanks to God -- and to many details of our practice, so that they will feel more at home when we worship together.
Pre-K-Kindergarten
This class, led by Mary Knight and Fred Young, will continue with the lectionary-based curriculum that was followed in the Fall. This curriculum provides the best resources for this developmental level.
Backstage at St. Thomas
Following the 10:00 a.m. service on January 20, we will offer any children, youth, or adults who are interested an opportunity to explore the Sanctuary with us. We will answer questions about anything and everything, from how the organ works to why we have three candles on the altar, and not two.
Instructed Eucharist
The Epiphany program will culminate with an instructed Eucharist in Church at 10:00 a.m. on February 10 for everyone. The kids, with chaperones, will sit in front to have a good view, and together we will walk through the service as a whole.
Please put February 10 on your calendar, so you won‚t miss this great educational event!
