Vestry Highlights - April 2008

Financial Report: David noted that operating revenue and expenses were on track for the first quarter. Glenn reported that we were able to reset our mortgage at 5 7/8% in March. This rate is good until 2013.

Fund-raising: Lori reported that coffee sales netted $750, and we are currently working on our plant sale and craft show for May. A detailed discussion of the signage that we will need to advertise events at St. Thomas ensued. We will pursue both a short-term solution, to aid up-coming fund-raisers, and a long-term solution that will work for all of our events.

Audit Matters:
Glenn and David discussed steps that the Church has taken to answer the concerns raised in our 2006 audit. The vestry also appointed Deborah Forbes, Pat Smith, Tom Manteuffel and Kristin Bone to serve as our 2007 audit committee.

Officer Turnover: Stephen informed the vestry that after long and illustrious service to the Church, David Lindsay has stepped down as our Diocesan Delegate. He will be replaced by our alternate, Betsy Heilman. The vestry also elected Al Beatty as a new trustee for the Church. Al, along with Jack Cashman, will replace Paul Loiseaux and Carlton Rosenburg as trustees and will serve with Laura Barlow, a continuing trustee, in this capacity.

Assistant Rector: Fred, Cleta, and Stephen discussed with the vestry the letter of agreement that we formulated for our new assistant, in line with our current budget. This letter is awaiting the approval of the appropriate Episcopal authorities so that it can be finalized. Our new assistant is planning to start on Monday, July 21. We are considering converting the back half of the storage space off the sanctuary into an office for the assistant. There was a great deal of energy at the meeting over the assistant’s contribution to our overall program at St. Thomas.

Messenger Mailing: We had a lively discussion of the most efficient method to distribute the Messenger to the congregation. We considered both the variety of costs of mailing the Messenger and the significant contribution that this document makes to our parish life. It was decided that we would allow those who wished to receive the Messenger only by e-mail to opt out of paper distribution and to ask the congregation to pick-up copies of the Messenger on the first Sunday of the month. Those who were unable to pick up their copy at this time would have it mailed to them.
