Annual Parish Retreat
Each year, the parishioners of St. Thomas have the opportunity to spend a weekend at Shrine Mont in Orkney Springs, Virginia, a community in western Shenandoah County, at our annual Parish Retreat.
This Retreat continues to be one of the highlights of the church year. Each year we welcome new participants and dedicated returnees. We spend time getting to know one another over meal times, worship, singing, and fellowship. The kids strengthen their ties with their church friends, making up games and excursions to the playground in this beautiful natural setting. In an old-town atmosphere, the kids have more freedom than they do at home and know when the meal bells ring to gather at the dining-room door, where we then sit at large tables and eat family-style. Other highlights include a bonfire and s’mores. This year (2019), we added a new tradition – square dancing with several other churches. We conclude the weekend on Sunday morning with Eucharist at the Shrine (which is the Cathedral for the Diocese of Virginia). If you haven’t yet joined St. Thomas’ at Shrine Mont, add it to your list of things to do!
Where’s the Retreat?
Shrine Mont is the camp of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. It’s located in Orkney Springs, VA – about 2 hours west of McLean. You can learn more about all that Shrine Mont has to offer here.
Individual groups in the church have also organized other short retreats from time to time, including an Episcopal Church Women’s weekend retreat.
We offer periodic quiet days. The church seasons of Advent (in December) and Lent (the 40 days preceding Easter) are perfect times to pause and spend a portion of the day in quiet and contemplation. In the past, these quiet days were held at Dayspring, a retreat center in Germantown, MD. Most recently, we stayed on our campus and enjoyed the beauty of our own corner of creation.
Please check the St. Thomas Calendar to learn more about upcoming activities!
